Arthrosamid® is an injectable hydrogel treatment used for the management of knee osteoarthritis.
It is designed to provide longer-lasting symptom relief in selected patients by acting as a viscoelastic implant within the knee joint. Arthrosamid is not a cure for arthritis, and individual response varies depending on factors such as disease severity, joint stability, and overall health.
Suitability for Arthrosamid requires careful assessment, including review of imaging and an in-person clinical examination, to ensure it is an appropriate option.
The cost of an Arthrosamid injection is £2400. We offer a free initial telephone consultation to explore whether Arthrosamid may be suitable, followed, if appropriate, by a paid face-to-face consultation and examination before any treatment decision is made.
Arthrosamid® is classed as an injectable knee implant, rather than a conventional injected medication. It is a non-biodegradable hydrogel that remains within the knee joint and is not absorbed by the body.
After injection, Arthrosamid integrates with the synovial tissue, forming a long-acting synovial scaffold that may help modify joint mechanics and reduce inflammation-related symptoms.
In selected patients, this can lead to reduced pain and stiffness and improved knee function, although individual response varies and outcomes depend on factors such as arthritis severity and joint stability.
Arthrosamid® is a relatively new treatment, and the clinical evidence base is still evolving. Published studies suggest that some patients experience meaningful improvements in pain and function following treatment, although results vary depending on patient selection and disease severity.
Arthrosamid has demonstrated a favourable safety profile in published studies. Some observational studies report that a proportion of patients experience improvement within the first few weeks, with sustained benefit reported in some cases during longer-term follow-up. Ongoing clinical trials continue to assess longer-term outcomes and comparative effectiveness.
If you decide to proceed with Arthrosamid treatment, we will provide a prescription for antibiotics to be taken in the hours before your appointment.
The procedure is performed in a clean operating theatre environment. Using ultrasound guidance, a fine needle is carefully inserted into the knee joint. Local anaesthetic is used to minimise discomfort during the procedure.
If excess fluid is present within the knee, this may be aspirated before the Arthrosamid is injected into the joint under ultrasound guidance.
We offer a free, no-obligation telephone consultation with one of our doctors to discuss your symptoms, previous treatments, and whether Arthrosamid or another injectable treatment may be worth considering.
If Arthrosamid appears potentially suitable, this will be followed by a paid face-to-face consultation and examination, including review of appropriate imaging, before any treatment decision is made. If you do not already have recent imaging, X-rays or MRI scans can be arranged where clinically indicated.
The cost of an Arthrosamid injection is £2400. Consultation and imaging costs are discussed in advance, and no treatment is offered without a full clinical assessment and shared decision-making.
To begin the process, please use our online booking form to get in touch. We will arrange a free 15-minute telephone consultation with one of our doctors to discuss your knee symptoms, previous treatments, and general medical history, and to explore whether Arthrosamid may be appropriate to consider.
If Arthrosamid appears potentially suitable, this will be followed by a mandatory face-to-face consultation and examination, including review of appropriate imaging, before any treatment decision is made. If you do not already have recent X-rays or MRI scans, these can be arranged for you.
We offer a range of injectable treatments for knee osteoarthritis. During your consultations, we will discuss all appropriate options, taking into account clinical suitability, expected benefits and limitations, and your individual circumstances.
Knee
Arthrosamid is licensed for use in the knee only. We are not able to consider requests to use it in other joints.
No. Arthrosamid is not suitable for all patients with knee osteoarthritis. Suitability depends on factors such as the severity and pattern of arthritis, joint stability, presence of inflammation, previous treatments, and overall health. A face-to-face clinical assessment and review of imaging are required before any treatment decision is made.
Yes. Imaging (X-ray and/or MRI) is required to assess the severity and pattern of arthritis and to determine whether Arthrosamid is an appropriate option. If you do not already have recent imaging, this can be arranged following your consultation where clinically indicated.
This is particularly important because Arthrosamid is a long-acting, non-biodegradable implant.
We offer a free initial telephone consultation to discuss your symptoms, medical history, and previous treatments. If Arthrosamid appears potentially suitable, this is followed by a paid face-to-face consultation and examination, including review of imaging. Treatment is only offered after this assessment and shared decision-making.
The cost of an Arthrosamid injection is £2400. Consultation and imaging costs are separate and are discussed in advance. We aim to be transparent about all fees before any treatment decision is made.
Some patients experience symptom improvement for months or years following treatment, while others may notice less benefit. Duration of effect varies between individuals, and long-term outcomes are still being studied. Arthrosamid does not cure arthritis and does not stop disease progression. We are happy to discuss current research at your consultation.
Arthrosamid does not replace knee replacement surgery. In selected patients, it may help manage symptoms and delay surgery, but it cannot reverse arthritis or guarantee that surgery will not be required in the future.
Yes. Arthrosamid is a non-biodegradable hydrogel and remains within the knee joint long-term. This is discussed in detail during consultation, including how it may affect future treatment options.
Most patients tolerate Arthrosamid well, but as with any joint injection, risks include pain, swelling, stiffness, inflammatory flare, and a small risk of infection. Because Arthrosamid is non-biodegradable, managing complications can be more complex than with temporary injections. All risks are discussed during consultation.
Response to Arthrosamid varies. If it does not provide meaningful symptom relief, other treatment options can still be considered. In some cases, surgery may be appropriate, although this is usually delayed for a period following injection.
Yes. We offer a range of injectable treatments for knee osteoarthritis, including corticosteroid injections, hyaluronic acid, and platelet-rich plasma (PRP). During your consultation, we will discuss which options may be appropriate based on your symptoms, imaging, and treatment goals.
No. Arthrosamid injections are not booked without prior assessment. All patients must undergo consultation and imaging review to confirm suitability before treatment is offered.
